Chura/ Choora/ Chuda
Chura is a set of bangles worn by the indian bride’s on their wedding ceremony, chura is mostly in red and white colour, now these can be changed with other colours according to bride’s outfit. Earlier the bride’s wear 21 bangles in each arm, but it also depends upon the bride’s choice and the size of the arm.
Kalira/ Kaleera/ Kalire
Kalira is an umbrella shaped ornament attached to the bride’s bangles or chura, beautify mostly in in golden and silver. Earlier kaliras are made with coconut and metal. Kaleeras are worn by the bride at the time of wedding on both the arms and attached with the chura at the time of wedding. Punjabi bride’s outfit is incomplete without dazzling Kalira’s.
Importance of wearing Chura and Kalira
In Indian tradition, Chura is associated with goodluck for newlyweds and red is associated with rising sun. That’s why Hindu bride’s wore red outfit and red chura during wedding ceremony as it stands for success and lushness. Earlier only hindu brides wear chura, but as fashion swing brides of all religions wear chura and Kalira on their wedding day. Earlier brides wear chura for one year, but according to change in trend and as decided before wedding the bride wear chura for 7 days, 11 days, 21 days, 40 days, 90 days or for one year. In Punjabi tradition the Kalira is equally important as Chura, Kalira is made of coconut and metal, Coconut is the symbol that she never live without food in new house and metal is the symbol for wealth and fortune.
